River Road has become a major truck route, funneling trucks from Roberts Bank and Tsawwassen to the Surrey Fraser Docks and beyond. The Tilbury Industrial Area also relies on River Road for its through traffic, for cargo and its employees.
In a letter (dated Oct. 26, 2005) to Mayor Jackson, Chris Badger, VP, the Port of Vancouver says that extending truck gate hours is a priority with the Vancouver Port Authority. They plan to gradually extend the hours toward 24/7operation, as cargo volumes increase.
The speed limit is 50 km/h, but the traffic is often moving much faster. A recent radar check had the traffic pegged at an average of 58 km/h, with some traffic slower and some much faster.
Delta Council recently requested a ban of all truck traffic from River Road between Elevator Road and Nordel Way. Translink turned down that request as they felt there were not suitable alternate routes for the truck traffic. Mayor Jackson said that council would apply for a night time ban on truck traffic.
The Gateway Program has promised that the South Fraser Perimeter Road
would remove Truck Traffic from residential neighbourhoods and local
roads, but neighbours are concerned that access ramps to River Road
continue to be designed and no promises of future bans on truck traffic
have been offered.
